Review Delilah Bon @ Ekko: Voor iedereen die frustraties kwijt moet

Delilah Bon, aka Lauren Tate, is een naam die je zeker eens moet opzoeken als je deze nog niet kent. Deze straffe madam weet als geen ander om muziek te maken die als krachtig anthem dient voor gemarginaliseerde gemeenschappen, vooral vrouwen, non-binaire personen en de LGBTQ+ gemeenschap. Dit allemaal in haar eigen stijl die "Brat Punk" wordt genoemd.

Op donderdag 6 maart waren we aanwezig in een gezellig concertzaaltje bij onze noorderburen genaamd 'Ekko' in Utrecht.

Het voorprogramma werd opgevuld door Pentastone. Deze 5-koppige band wist de zaal al heel goed mee te krijgen om in de stemming te komen van de 'rage' van Delilah Bon. De frontvrouw Luisa Knauß kan serieus haar keel opentrekken met momenten, al moet ik zeggen dat ik soms het gevoel had dat er meer uit kon. Al een geluk kreeg ze voldoende steun van de rest van de band om toch die extra power er bij te krijgen.

Delilah Bon daarentegen heeft niet eens een band nodig. Wat een strot heeft die vrouw. Deze keer had ze niet haar gewoonlijke entourage bij. Normaal gezien treedt ze op met twee goede vriendinnen van haar, waarvan een de bassiste is, die mee zorgen voor de sfeer en dynamiek. En die alsook een hele leuke gecoördineerde show neerzetten. Laatst is dan ook haar vriend erbij gekomen om de drums op zich te nemen. Deze keer was het nog steeds de vriend achter de drums maar twee andere vrouwen die zowel bas als gitaar op zich namen. De bassiste was dan ook niemand minder dan Becky Baldwin, waarmee Delilah vroeger nog een grunge/punkband had genaamd Hands Off Gretel.

Er wordt geopend met een medley van 'Freak Of The Week' en 'Brat'. Het publiek doet gelijk mee en de toon is gezet. Wat wel gelijk opviel is dat Lauren heel snel buiten adem was en veel woorden of zinnen skipte om genoeg lucht te kunnen nemen voor het volgende. Ze gaf dan ook lachend toe dat ze eigenlijk nooit het dansen heeft gerepeteerd tijdens de repetities. Even had ik mee stress in haar plaats dat dit zo voor heel de show ging zijn maar na een paar nummers had ze zich herpakt en kwam de ware klank van Delilah Bon naar boven.

Ze bracht een mooie balans van oude en nieuwe nummers, zo kwam bijvoorbeeld 'Clown', 'Chiquitita' en zelfs 'Bad Attitude' aan bod maar evenals de nieuwe parels zoals 'I Am The Best', Finally See me' en 'Evil, Hate filled Female' waren zeker niet te missen. Er werd een hartverwarmende speech gegeven bij het emotionele nummer 'War On Women' en zoals gewoonlijk brak de hel los bij 'Dead Men Don't Rape'. Je zag aan het publiek dat de woorden en de sfeer van de nummers insloegen als een bom, er werd geroepen, gehuild en gelachen. Dit is waar muziek voor staat, het bijeenbrengen van mensen, het delen van emoties en even heel de buitenwereld vergeten. Delilah Bon is een artieste voor alle leeftijden en genders en ik raad iedereen aan om ze op zen minst een keer live te zien want het is de moeite meer dan waard.

This fierce lady knows better than anyone how to create music that serves as a powerful anthem for marginalized communities, especially women, non-binary individuals, and the LGBTQ+ community. All of this in her own style, which is called "Brat Punk."

On Thursday, March 6th, we were present at a cozy concert hall in our northern neighbors' country called 'Ekko' in Utrecht.

The opening act was Pentastone. This five-piece band did a great job of getting the crowd in the right mood for Delilah Bon's 'rage.' The frontwoman, Luisa Knauß, can really belt it out at times, although I must say I sometimes felt like she could push even further. Fortunately, she got plenty of support from the rest of the band to add that extra power.

Delilah Bon, on the other hand, doesn't even need a band. What a voice that woman has. This time, she didn't have her usual entourage with her. She typically performs with two good friends, one of whom is the bassist, who help set the vibe and dynamics, creating a very fun and coordinated show. Recently, her boyfriend has also joined in to take over the drums. This time, it was still her boyfriend behind the drums, but two other women took care of both bass and guitar. The bassist was none other than Becky Baldwin, with whom Delilah had previously played in a grunge/punk band called Hands Off Gretel.

The show opened with a medley of 'Freak Of The Week' and 'Brat.' The audience immediately joined in, setting the tone for the night. What stood out right away was that Lauren got out of breath very quickly and skipped many words or phrases to catch her breath for the next part. She laughingly admitted that she hadn’t practiced the dancing during rehearsals. For a moment, I felt stressed for her, thinking this might continue throughout the whole show, but after a few songs, she regained her composure, and the true sound of Delilah Bon shone through.

She brought a beautiful balance of old and new songs, with tracks like 'Clown,' 'Chiquitita,' and even 'Bad Attitude' making an appearance. But the new gems like 'I Am The Best,' 'Finally See Me,' and 'Evil, Hate-filled Female' were definitely not to be missed. A heartwarming speech was given during the emotional song 'War On Women,' and as usual, all hell broke loose during 'Dead Men Don't Rape.' You could see in the audience that the words and the atmosphere of the songs hit like a bomb, with people shouting, crying, and laughing. This is what music is all about: bringing people together, sharing emotions, and briefly forgetting the outside world. Delilah Bon is an artist for all ages and genders, and I highly recommend everyone to see her live at least once because it is more than worth it.
